Nashville Moms: 10 Baby Items to Buy at Consignment Sales

If you’re a first-time mom, it can feel like you need an entire warehouse of baby gear before your little one even arrives. From swings to sleep sacks to strollers with more features than your first car, the baby industry is really good at convincing you that you need everything — and that you need it brand new. The truth? So many baby items are used for just a few short months (if that). As birth educators and moms, we’re big believers in saving your money — and your storage space — for what truly matters. That’s why we love Nashville’s incredible consignment sales like Oak Hill, Otter Creek, and Little Sprouts.

Here are 10 baby items we always recommend buying used:

  1. Halo Sleep Sacks – especially newborn sizes (0–3 months and 3–6 months). You’ll rotate through these quickly.

  2. Travel stroller – we love the Babyzen YOYO for easy, on-the-go use.

  3. Baby Bjorn Infant Bouncer – amazing for those early months, but used for a short season.

  4. Ergobaby Infant Carrier – such a great investment, and easy to find gently used.

  5. Baby Bjorn Pack ’n Play – perfect for travel and visits, but not something you need brand new.

  6. Single BOB stroller – ideal for hikes, walks, and all-terrain adventures.

  7. Angelcare Bath Support – a newborn essential that you’ll outgrow quickly.

  8. Exersaucer – we love the Skip Hop version, but any brand works since it’s only used for a short window.

  9. High chair – the Joovy foldable compact is one of our favorites.

  10. Infant clothing items – including footed zip-up newborn sleepers (you’ll go through so many!), Zutano booties (because socks never stay on), newborn hats, and other everyday essentials.

Buying secondhand is such a smart move — just be sure to inspect items carefully. Always check for recalls, test that buckles and straps function properly, and make sure nothing is missing pieces. Look for excessive wear, loose stitching, rust, cracks, or weakened elastic. Wash all fabric items thoroughly before use. And remember: car seats and crib mattresses should always be purchased new for safety reasons. A little discernment goes a long way — and can save you hundreds.
